ISFJ – Meaning and personality type (Defender personality type)

SUMMARY
ISFJ stands for people who are Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, Judging personality types. People with this personality type are reserved and private, yet can serve others selflessly. They live in the present, remain loyal to social conventions, and feel service to humanity as the prime responsibility of humankind.

ISFJs are unique and many of their qualities defy them to be called an introvert. They are sensitive yet analytical, reserved, and quiet, yet possess great people skills. For them, life is a journey where one is born to serve humanity.

These wonderful people are nurturers and play a supporting role for their family, friends, colleagues, and many other unknown people throughout their lives.

Being an introvert and a judging personality type, they have a conservative outlook towards life and are extremely systematic, planned, and orderly people.

Sometimes these altruists neglect their own needs, desires just to accommodate someone else’s pursuits.

ISFJs are generous, warm, and exceptionally kind-hearted. So, you will always find them working in professions like medicine, social work, academics, nursing, etc.

The defender personalities are meticulous, sometimes they go beyond simple work and try to work as a perfectionist. They finish their work on time.

Sometimes, they are being overburdened with work by some unscrupulous people who take undue advantage of their kind acts.

Most defenders will go out of their comfort zones and work relentlessly to make others happy, or delight them at the home, workplace, etc.

This happens because defenders struggle to say ‘no’ and in most cases they cannot stand up for their own rights, readily turning into a victim.

Cognitive dynamics of ISFJ personality type (The Functional stacking)

The 16 personality types described in the MBTI are based on four cognitive functions described by Carl Jung. The functions are placed as:

  • Sensing / Intuition (S/E) – process information
  • Thinking / feeling (T/F) – make decisions

These four functions can either be processed inwardly (introversion) or outwardly (extroversion). Moreover, these cognitive functions are arranged in a hierarchy or functional stack with the most dominant function placed first, and later followed by an auxiliary, tertiary, and inferior functions.

1. Dominant function – Introverted sensing (Si)

  • This function enables the ISFJs to pay attention to details and remain focused in the present
  • They like concrete facts and figures rather than abstract information.
  • This function also helps them to remain firmly grounded in the real world. These individuals are realistic and practical-minded.

2. Auxiliary function – Extraverted Feeling (Fe)

  • INFJs place great importance on their personal beliefs and values.
  • This function helps ISFJs to develop harmonious social connections, in spite of being an introvert.
  • Extraverted feelings also make them kind, dutiful, and empathetic toward others.

3. Tertiary function – Introverted thinking (Ti)

  • Introverted thinking makes them good planners. They are well-organized and follow a particular pattern.
  • Logic is used to understand facts and how everything functions.

4. Inferior functions – Extraverted intuition {Ne)

  • As this function is not properly developed in INFJs personality, they are unable to focus on future possibilities. Rather, they live in the present moments.
  • If they develop this function, they will get better in developing future insights and how to use the present opportunities to carve future career paths and goals in life.

If you are keen to know more about the ISFJ cognitive function, you can follow the link here.

ISFJ relationships

So far, we have seen what the ISFJ personality type is all about and the indications that can help others identify people of this personality.

In relationships, ISFJs are accommodating and adjustable by nature. They are dedicated, loyal, and dependable.

Being introverts, they may take some time to mingle openly with their social contacts. But when they like and love someone, they look for long-term stable bonding.

Let us now see how these people deal with various kinds of relationships:

Romantic partner/spouse

When an ISFJ falls in a relationship, their kindness turns into a joy, which they get while taking care of their home and family.

It comes from the fact that it allows these individuals to offer practical and emotional support whenever needed.

They make sure that their partner is happy in the bedroom. Moreover, they also put a tremendous amount of energy and time into finding different ways to meet their partners’ needs.

In return, an ISFJ would only expect to feel loved, receive commitment and appreciation from their partner. If a partner fails to appreciate an ISFJ’s kindness and openly criticizes them, then with time, those suppressed emotions can burst out by way of scathing verbal attacks.

It becomes easy to take advantage of an ISFJ’s kindness, keeping their dreams and requirements unfulfilled.

For a fulfilling relationship and to make this dream come true, it is necessary for an ISFJ to take concrete action.

They must not let their partner take advantage of them and give equal importance to their dreams.

ISFJ as parent

The warm and caring nature of an ISFJ makes the task of parenting come naturally to them. This personality type of individual feels that they are born to undertake the responsibilities as a parent. It gives them a lot of pleasure to take responsibility and assures them that their children become confident and be successful.

A defender personality will never take anything for granted when it comes to parenting. Right from the beginning, the altruism of ISFJs becomes quite clear in their approach to children. They make sure to offer a safe, stable environment for their children with the utmost care, love, and support.

During the younger years of their children, the patience of an ISFJ turns out to be crucial. The loving and supportive ISFJ parents would help their children learn to grow up, become independent, and have the self-determination to do whatever they want.

As ISFJs possess the traditional personality type, they accept ancient standards filled with predefined roles as parents and children.

They look at their role as the opportunity to impart their own set of wisdom. An ISFJ parent would always ensure to make their children understand the significance of dedication and responsibility.

ISFJ as friends

ISFJs are generous when it comes to praising and supporting others. Therefore, it is nothing unusual that others love to be their close friends. The challenges lie in an ISFJ to start considering other individuals as friends. It is because defenders are reserved and of protective nature.

Connecting with someone at a deeper emotional level is extremely important for an ISFJ to treat someone as a friend.

Due to this reason, friendships happen out of keeping in contact with one another. One cannot expect an ISFJ to be friends with someone out of any random meeting.

Once a defender manages to know a person well over time, something dramatic occurs. The person falls into the comfort zone and allows that individual to become their friend.

For the friendship with a defender to flourish, two individuals must have mutual understanding, support, and reassurance of one another.

ISFJs need a whole lot of positive feedback. Admitting this particular need shows a lot of vulnerability. If one takes care of this vulnerability, then it will help create the bond that is needed.

On the other hand, no one is perfect, and hence each of us has our weaknesses. People must identify their weak points, work on them to make improvements, and, thus, lead their lives happily.

Let us first discuss the positive attributes of an ISFJ

1. A good helping hand to others

An ISFJ person is always willing to share their experience, knowledge, and time with those who need them.

They are ready to help others at any moment. It is more so with their family and friends. Defenders strive to create win-win situations, hence opting for empathy rather than judgment as and when possible.

ISFJs are enthusiastic individuals. They use their imagination and reliability to apply to something they believe can create a difference in others’ lives.

For this, they should be clear about their ultimate goal, whether they have helped someone fight poverty through an initiative or make someone’s day.

ISFJ – shortcomings

Let us now discuss the shortcomings of ISFJ personalities in detail.

1. Face problems in expressing internal conflict

ISFJs have problems in resolving conflicts with others. They are naturally inclined to maintain harmonious relationships. It shows that these personality types’ people look to avoid tension rather than find a solution for it.

ISFJs feel comfortable discussing issues when others remain calm in tense situations and ready to give them a patient hearing. Defenders must express their problems clearly to get rid of this problem forever.

2. Takes Things Personally

A significant drawback in ISFJs is that they fail to separate the issues linked with personal and impersonal circumstances. Due to this flaw, any negativity arising from criticism gets carried over from their professional to their own lives, thus hampering their peace of mind.

The defenders must immediately realize that not everything in this world needs a reaction from their end. They should bypass certain things and not remain attached to them personally.

3. Struggles to take a stand for themselves

An ISFJ finds it quite tough to take a firm stand for their rights when someone does not treat them with respect.

They may accept any criticism from others and suppress all their frustrations within themselves. This approach of theirs gives rise to psychological and physical problems.

ISFJ personality type people can make an effort to take a firm stand for themselves. This approach can help them express their opinions confidently and let others take their words seriously.

4. Gets Overburdened

A defender, or in other words, an ISFJ, has complete dedication to their work, and they carry out their responsibilities with perfection.

Now, they are also averse to emotional conflict. Combining these aspects can create a scenario where ISFJs become overburdened.

People can easily allot their share of work to ISFJs as they always struggle to say no to others. Hence, they lose sleep over meeting others’ obligations on time.

ISFJ Myers Briggs personality test

Though many free personality tests are widely found across cultures to determine the personality dynamics of a person, yet the MBTI remains the best objective measure to serve this purpose.

The Myers-Briggs personality test was developed with the purpose to identify the kind of person you are. This personality test is a self-report inventory that is based on the personality theory of Carl Jung.

The test was developed by Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs in the early 1940s and later several revisions were done based on empirical findings.

The test shows the results of 16 personality types. It shows the random variations where the person’s behavior can change according to heredity and environmental factors from the outside world.

The test consists of nearly 100 items that have two statements. The respondent will choose any one statement that fits his/her individual typology.

The MBTI describes 16 personalities based on four different categories.

These four categories were first described by Carl Jung in his Analytical theory of personality.

One letter from each category is used to frame the four-letter personality type of the person; such as ISTJ, ISTP, ENFJ, ENTP, ISFP, etc.

If you want to know your personality, you can take the test here.

If you are a defender of personality type, you need to work on your weaknesses so that people cannot take you for granted. Since you are quite bad at ignoring your needs and problems, you may find yourself in dissatisfaction every now and then.

Many of the challenges that ISFJs face in social life need to be worked out well, so as to form a balanced personality.

A good head and a good heart is always a formidable combination”
